📤 How to Migrate Emails From Gmail to cPanel Using an Email Client

1 min read

Migrating emails from Gmail to your cPanel-hosted email account is easy using an email client like Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook. This method uses IMAP to copy your emails from one mailbox to another — no exporting or file conversion required!

🧰 What You’ll Need #

  • ✅ A computer with an email client (e.g., Thunderbird, Outlook)
  • ✅ Your Gmail login details
  • ✅ Your cPanel email address and password
  • ✅ IMAP enabled in Gmail

#

⚙️ Step 1: Enable IMAP in Gmail #

Before starting, make sure IMAP is turned on in Gmail:

  1. Log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Click the ⚙️ Settings icon → See all settings.
  3. Go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. In the IMAP access section, select Enable IMAP.
  5. Click Save Changes.

📥 Step 2: Set Up Gmail in Your Email Client #

Open your email client (we recommend Mozilla Thunderbird) and add your Gmail account.

Gmail IMAP settings:

  • IMAP Server: imap.gmail.com
  • Port: 993
  • Encryption: SSL/TLS
  • SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465 or 587
  • Encryption: SSL/TLS or STARTTLS
  • Username: Your full Gmail email address
  • Password: Your Gmail password or App Password (if using 2FA)

🔐 Tip: If 2-Step Verification is enabled on your Gmail, go to your Google Account > Security > App Passwords to generate a password for the email client.

📧 Step 3: Add Your cPanel Email to the Same Client #

Next, add your cPanel email account in the same email client.

cPanel IMAP settings:

  • IMAP Server: mail.yourdomain.com
  • Port: 993
  • Encryption: SSL/TLS
  • SMTP Server: mail.yourdomain.com
  • Port: 465
  • Encryption: SSL/TLS
  • Username: Your full cPanel email address
  • Password: Your email password

📝 You can find these settings in your cPanel under “Email Accounts” → “Connect Devices”.

🔄 Step 4: Transfer Emails from Gmail to cPanel #

Now that both accounts are set up:

  1. In your email client, browse to your Gmail inbox or other folders.
  2. Select the emails (or entire folders) you want to move.
  3. Drag and drop them into your cPanel email inbox or another folder.

📦 The emails will now begin syncing to your cPanel mailbox via IMAP. This process can take some time depending on the number of emails.

✅ Final Checks #

  • Open Webmail at yourdomain.com/webmail and choose Roundcube.
  • Make sure all emails have arrived.
  • Check folder structure and clean up if needed.
  • Send a test email to confirm your cPanel email is working properly.
